Face Packs for Dry Skin
Face masks are a great way to re-hydrate and refresh the skin. The skin loses its capacity to retain moisture, as we grow old. The extreme climatic conditions to which we get exposed, as we grow old worsen the condition and skin becomes more dry. Most popularly, lotions and creams are used to soothe the dry skin. Using a mild soap or a cleansing body wash might eliminate the problem temporarily. If you suffer from dry skin that feels stretched and rough through the day, using a facemask specially designed to moisten and rejuvenate it might be just the thing you need. A face pack made of fruits rich in vitamins and water can have a good effect on the dry skin. Some of the fruits that can be used are papaya, peach, and banana. Mashed avocado can also be applied to the skin for a glowing effect.
Moisturizing is very important specially in Winters. If our skin is not moisturized well, it becomes dry and flaky resulting in wrinkles. A mild lotion or moisturizer can follow these face packs, to retain the moisture produced by the face pack. Avocado is really good for dry and dehydrated skin. Egg Yolk and Olive Oil are also an excellent moisturizer and honey is a natural cleanser. Fruits that are rich in water and vitamins make for good face packs for those who have dry skin. You can make a paste of papaya or peach and leave it for around 20 minutes and then wash your face. The result would be fresh and youthful skin. Use of face packs varies according to climate, skin type and age also. Face packs may be of different type, for example; face pack made of fruits or sour cream and cream etc.
Herbal face packs help smooth the structure of the epidermis. Squeeze half a lemon and mix the juice with one beaten egg white. Apply on your face and leave for overnight. Wash your face with warm water. This face pack is also very effective for Dry skin. Face packs bring necessary microelements on facial skin that help smooth wrinkles and soften skin. Herbal face packs contain herbs that have a disinfecting effect such as chamomile. The usage of herbal face packs is simple. But before you begin, it's recommended to give your face a steam bath. Use mineral water to freshen your face. Don't use a washcloth-a rough texture can irritate. Use nondetergent, neutral-pH products to cleanse your skin.
Face packs lead to fast and effective removal of dead skin cells, toxins, and slag. Face massage using almond oil makes the skin soft and removes dry skin. Cleanse your face before applying the chosen face mask. Afterwards, rinse with warm water and than apply moisturizer. You can apply face packs on a daily basis and in few weeks you will notice considerable improvement of your skin. It will look younger, the wrinkles will disappear, and the color will get livelier. Scrubs are very good when it is necessary to clean and really get under the skin. Rose water, almond oil, honey, olive oil, and beaten curd can all be used as good face packs. Daily massage or facial sauna with herbal oils and use of mild detergent and fragrance free soap can work wonders on dry skin.

Tennis Elbow-diseases
What do doctors call this condition?
Epicondylitis, epitrochlear bursitis
What is this condition?
Tennis elbow is a painful inflammation of the forearm extensor tendon fibers at the point where they attach to the upper arm (humerus) adjacent to the elbow joint.
What causes it?
Tennis elbow probably begins as a partial tear on the involved tendon and is common among tennis players and other persons whose activities require a forceful grasp, wrist extension against resistance, or frequent rotation of the forearm. Left untreated, the condition can become disabling.
What are its symptoms?
The first symptom is elbow pain that gradually worsens and often radiates to the forearm and back of the hand whenever the person grasps an object or twists his or her elbow. Other symptoms are tenderness over the joint and a weak grasp. In rare instances, tennis elbow may cause local heat, swelling, or restricted range of motion.
How is it diagnosed?
Because X-rays are almost always negative, the doctor depends on the person's reports of pain while playing tennis or a similar activity. The pain can be reproduced by having the person move his or her wrist in a manner similar to that used when swinging a racket.
How is it treated?
Treatment aims to relieve pain, usually by local injection of corticosteroid and a local anesthetic and by taking aspirin or Indocin. Supportive treatment includes an immobilizing splint from the forearm to the elbow, which generally relieves pain in 2 to 3 weeks. Some doctors use heat therapy, such as warm compresses and ultrasound, and physical therapy, such as manipulation and massage.
A "tennis elbow strap" has helped many people. This strap, which is wrapped snugly around the forearm, helps relieve the strain on affected forearm muscles and tendons. If these measures prove ineffective, surgical release of the tendon at the hand may be necessary.

Facts and Treatment of Skin Cancer
Skin cancer — the abnormal growth of skin cells — most often develops on skin exposed to the sun. But this common form of cancer can also occur on areas of the skin not ordinarily exposed to sunlight. Skin cancer is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the outer layers of your skin. Your skin protects your body against heat, light, infection, and injury. It also stores water, fat, and vitamin D.
Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that occurs in the melanocytes, which are cells in the outer layer of the skin (the epidermis). Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. Melanoma may be cured if caught and treated early, but if left untreated the majority of melanomas eventually spread to other parts of the body. Early detection and surgery to remove the melanoma are successful in curing most cases of melanoma; however it is rarely curable in its later stages.
Facts
There are three types of skin cancer: the two most common are Basal Cell and Squamous Cell Carcinomas. They are easily treated and rarely fatal. The third and most dangerous is the malignant melanoma.
Skin cancer is the second most common cancer in the United Kingdom, with about 40,500 new cases each year, of which 6,000 are malignant melanomas. About 1,500 people die from melanomas in Britain every year.
Melanomas can spread two ways: horizontally, which gives rise to the superficial spreading melanoma, or they can grow downwards and the cells will invade the lymph glands, which is much more dangerous.
Over the past 60 years, damage to the planet's ozone layer has increased the amount of harmful radiation that reaches your skin.
Causes
Skin cancer begins in your skin's top layer — the epidermis. The epidermis is as thin as a pencil line, and it provides a protective layer of skin cells that your body continually sheds. The epidermis contains three types of cells:
Sunburn and Ultra Violet light exposure causes maximum damage resulting in DNA damage to the skin. The body can usually repair this damage before gene mutations occur. But when a person’s body cannot repair the damaged DNA, then it results in skin cancer.
Squamous cells lie just below the outer surface.
Basal cells, which produce new skin cells, sit beneath the squamous cells.
Melanocytes, which produce melanin — the pigment that gives skin its normal color, are located in the lower part of your epidermis. Melanocytes produce more melanin when you're in the sun to help protect the deeper layers of your skin. Extra melanin produces the darker color of tanned skin.
Treatment
Freezing. Your doctor may destroy actinic keratoses and some small, early skin cancers by freezing them with liquid nitrogen (cryosurgery). The dead tissue sloughs off when it thaws. The treatment may leave a small, white scar. You may need a repeat treatment to remove the growth completely.
Excision: Small cancers can be removed by excising them out. It will be done under local anaesthetic.
Laser therapy. A precise, intense beam of light vaporizes growths, generally with little damage to surrounding tissue and with minimal bleeding, swelling and scarring. A doctor may use this therapy to treat superficial skin cancers or precancerous growths on lips.
Radiation therapy. Radiation may destroy basal and squamous cell carcinomas if surgery isn't an option.
Mohs surgery. This procedure is for larger, recurring or difficult-to-treat skin cancers, which may include both basal and squamous cell carcinomas. Your doctor removes the skin growth layer by layer, examining each layer under the microscope, until no abnormal cells remain.

Makeup That Lasts: Waterproof Cosmetics
Waterproof makeup is very convenient because it helps keep makeup looking fresh and clean. Because of its unique qualities, water-resistant makeup is often used for special occasions like weddings, anniversaries, birthdays or maybe even prom night. The makeup will not run or come off on delicate clothing, and it stays looking great much longer. Waterproof cosmetics contain a special form of dimethicone called dimethicone copolyol. This is a waterproof version of the same oil, formulated to adhere to skin and hair.
There are some women who may choose to go with waterproof everyday because of their profession. Wearing water proof, smudge proof or sweat proof cosmetics means that you'll look great all day or all night. Waterproof cosmetics should not be used by women suffering from eyelid dermatitis. Eyelid dermatitis is an allergic reaction to compounds that come into contact with the skin. While waterproof cosmetics are useful for events such as weddings, anniversaries, prom night, or other special occasions, excessive use can lead to potential damage to the skin. The best option is to save waterproof make-up for those rare occasions. Water proof eye products are especially terrific because our eyes tend to water, to get rubbed and to be generally irritated more than the rest of our faces.
Most cosmetics have an ingredient called dimethicone, which is a silicone-based oil. Dimethicone helps keep skin soft and assists in giving a smooth application of the product. Waterproof eye shadow means not having to reapply partway through an evening at a hot, crowded club, and since those places never have decent mirrors, you'd better plan to go home with the same makeup you wore in. Many women prefer cream eyeliner and shadow because it goes on more smoothly, but you can also set it more securely with powder. Waterproof cream to powder eyeliner is a powerful makeup combination: getting your eye makeup in waterproof forms is a great way to beat summer heat, winter rains and raccoon eyes at the end of a long day.

Beautiful Skin - Best Natural Remedies for Beautiful Skin
Everyone wants to have smooth and beautiful skin. You can achieve this by gathering the following ingredients, and following the simple steps below. It's simple and takes little time.
In fact there are many useful for skin components in mineral water. Expensive thermal sprays can be changed with mineral water. Small drops of mineral water are like micro massage for skin and it moistens skin greatly. Sprinkle face with mineral water once a day. Especially it is useful in winter. If you have carbonated mineral water, you need to keep it opened for 30-40 minutes before using. If you like the idea to use mineral water, here you’ll find some recipes of nice masks for different types of skin.
The keys to beautiful skin are maintaining the skin's acid mantle and a rapid turnover of skin cells that also rebuild damaged collagen and elastin to maintain strength, elasticity, and resiliency. This rapid turnover maintains ample levels of the water-holding proteoglycans and GAGs. The biocirculation (sometimes called the microcirculation) of capillaries and small blood vessels must constantly be renewed - damage to the microcirculation, which is common during aging, impairs nutrient flow to the skin - and produces the ‘graying” of skin associated with aging..
Vinegar has a tonic action that promotes blood circulation in the small capillaries that irrigate the skin. It is also antiseptic, preventing the proliferation of bacteria, viruses, or yeast that trigger infection. It can dissolve excessive fatty deposits at the surface of the skin and reduce scaly or peeling conditions. Lastly, vinegar regulates the pH of the skin. Vinegar is most effective when used with lavender, rosemary, rose, or elder flower. It is essential to use top-quality white wine or cider vinegar. Dry any fresh plant material for two days before using.

By having a good nights sleep you give your body more energy and you'll be more enthusiastic and feel more motivated to exercise.
Switch to physical (a.k.a. mineral) sunscreens, which remain on the surface of your skin and aren't absorbed into your system. (Physical sunscreens typically contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.) I love the Blue Lizard Suncream from Australia, which is available in many major U.S. chains.
Don't "Wine" About Lipstick. If you have trouble getting lipstick marks off wine glasses (which should only be washed in plain hot water, by the way - no soap!) then simply hold the lipstick-stained part of the glass over a steaming tea kettle and then wipe the lipstick off with a soft cloth.
Makeup should be used to help you look good and feel better. If you have the perfect mouth, then you have the option of following your own lip line and not using a pencil to line your lips. Merely brush the lipstick (either with a lipstick brush if you are using a tubelipstick, or with a wand) on your lips. If you want your upper lip to look more protruding, do this with your highlighter: Notice the cleft, or indentation, between your nose andupper lip. Put a lighter foundation or a highlighter there-it reflects light and makes the upper lip look as if it is protruding.
Love the skin you're in. It's a popular phrase and the focus of a major marketing campaign - and it's much easier said than done. The skin is the first line of defense against all elements, disease, infection, dirt, germs and foreign objects. It's no wonder, then, that the skin care industry is booming!
Stop using retinoids (like Retin-A, Tazorac, or Differin, for example) and over-the-counter products with retinol. They are in the same family as Accutane, which you may already have been told to avoid.
Exfoliate Exfoliation is the step most people skip in their weekly skincare routine. But trust me, if you start properly exfoliating your skin, you will notice an almost immediate difference. According to Berg, one of the reasons men's skin looks more youthful than women's is because men tend to exfoliate daily when they shave. There are several ways to exfoliate skin: Microdermabrasion, chemical peels and retinoids.
Moisturize While I know of at least one famous beauty editor who swore skin doesn't need moisturizer, basically everyone else I've read disagrees and is an adamant believer in it. A basic law of beauty is that everyone, no matter her skin type, should moisturize. Even if your skin is oily, it will benefit from moisturizers. (The only exception is those with acne). Why? Moisturizers seal moisture into skin (Berg calls this the 'Saran Wrap effect'). So how much should you moisturize? Your skin will tell you.

Benefits of Oxygen Facial
1) Like all living things, our skin needs oxygen to survive, reproduce and regenerate. In younger skin, this process is very efficient, but as we age, the micro capillaries degenerate and skin does not receive the nourishment it needs. As a result, the metabolism of our skin cells slows collagen and elastin content drops and fine lines, discoloration and wrinkles begin to appear. Sun exposure, air pollution, extreme hot and cold variances, diet fluctuations, worry and day-to-day stresses and strains of life affect the condition of your skin. Adding oxygen to your facial treatment will soothe and refresh your skin naturally, like no other treatment.
2) Oxygen is essential to the health and maintenance of skin cells in the human body. With age, skin loses its ability to retain and utilize Oxygen for normal metabolic processes, such as repair and regeneration. When oxygen is lacking at the cellular level, our skin begins to age—sometimes prematurely. Facials with Oxygen help nourish and rejuvenate dull skin.
3) So why does oxygen work to make our skin smoother and softer? The theory behind oxygenated beauty is that we all need oxygen for survival. Oxygen is what revives and replenishes the cells in our body. However, due to the pollutants in our environment today, our oxygen content has been greatly reduced. It is also true that as we age, oxygen does not reach our skin cells as efficiently, which is what leads to the aging process. The result can be thinner skin and the appearance of wrinkles and age spots. An oxygen facial will replenish the amount of oxygen that the skin receives, leaving it hydrated, plumper and younger looking.
4) To receive a facial is one of the best skin care decisions you can make! Your anti-aging skin care facial treatment will purify, detoxify, stimulate circulation, improve circulation, heal the skin, prevent skin damage, revitalize the skin and soften lines and wrinkles. The basic steps for a facial skin care treatment are 1. Cleanse, 2. Exfoliate, 3. Massage, 4. Apply mask,
5. tone, and 6. Hydrate. See below for the many choices to help enhance your natural beauty and restore a more youthful appearance.
5) Oxygen has incredible regenerative powers. For decades, doctors have not only recognized this fact but also used it in the treatment of burns, gangrene and wounds that simply would not heal otherwise. In an oxygen rich environment, bacteria, viruses, and fungal infections simply do not survive. Moreover, high concentrations of oxygen trigger the bodies own healing functions. If you are severely burned or cut, the skin will rapidly heal in such a favorable environment.

Caring for Oily Skin Types
Beautiful, healthy skin starts with cleansing and toning – an important step for both morning and night-time skin care. There are 5 basic skin care types: Oily, combination, sensitive, dry & sun-damaged. Oily skin has a terribly negative effect on self-esteem as well as body image. Greasiness and shine often outweigh acne concerns. Oil (sebum) is produced by sebaceous glands. Normal sebum production performs the important job of lubricating your skin. Sebum also carries with it dead skin cells shedding from your hair follicle walls. The amount of sebum an individual generates is determined by genetics (and often increases during adolescence). While excess sebum is not directly responsible for acne, it can contribute to clogged pores.
In this kind of skin, oil producing glands are overactive. They produces more oil than is needed, which oozes up, giving the skin a greasy shine. Oily skin tends to look thick, shiny and dully colored, and is often susceptible to skin maladies such as acne, blackheads, whiteheads and pimples as the excess oils in the skin manifest If you want a good skin, the most important thing is to take care of it daily. First you cleansing your face. It is necessary to clean skin and the pores to remove dirt, dust, excess oil, salt, and waste coming within and coming from outside the body. Wash your face and other skin of body with plenty of water to get it cleaned.Second skin toner should be utilized to revitalize the skin and to get it a proper complexion.
Toning improves blood circulation in the skin and helps skin tissues to remain tight and firm. Use oil-free, noncomedogenic sunscreen whenever sun exposure is expected. If you skin is extremely oily (e.g. oily even after basic cleansing), you can follow with alcohol-based toner with salicylic acid. Some people with oily skin may benefit from a clay/mud mask once a week. Nourishing is very important to maintain the natural oil of the skin to make the skin lively. Different vitamin skin cream could be used to nourish the skin. Skin gets dry and looses its gloss. To give it the real look moisture should be applied from outside in the form of cream or lotion. It is better to use moisture just after bath. You could also use a clay mask (say once a week) as an oily skin care measure.

Treatments of Eczema – Detox to Heal Eczema
Cleansing your body is the foundation to superior health. The first thing to do if you want to change your health is to cleanse your body.
Detoxifying your system happens of its own accord every single day. It is a natural body function. Your body uses various organs and methods for detoxification. Your skin, bowels, urine, your lymph and your breathing.
However, in the West (particularly in the US and UK) you need to speed up the cleansing process as your body may become overwhelmed by the amount of excess waste and toxin your body must process.
This additional waste is produced from the foods you eat and your life style and because of the ever increasing pollution we are exposed to.
The best way to kick start your new health regime and to eliminate probably years and years of hidden waste is by following a gentle detox for between 5 and 8 days.
If you follow a three day cleanse be sure to begin on a Friday when you have the weekend to relax and chill whilst your body is working overtime.
To follow a three day apple fast purchase a box of organic apples from your green grocer. Ensure you pick three or four varieties and eat as many as you wish over the three days.
After your cleanse you should feel revitalized, rejuvenated, more energetic and your skin should be much calmer.
The best way to change your health for the better is with a gentle detox.

What Do You Know About Scabies (scabetic Eczema)-skin Disorders
Diagnostic Hallmarks
Distribution: finger webs, elbows, axillary folds, buttocks, breasts, and penis
History of contagion (family members or sexual partner with evidence of similar disease)
Identification of the mites, feces, or ova in scrapings from lesions
Response to therapy
Clinical Presentation
Scabies is basically a vesicular disease but the intensity of itching leads to such vigorous scratching that vesicles are destroyed as quickly as they are formed. This results in a presentation that almost always appears predominantly eczematous in morphology. Careful examination in a suspected case usually does reveal an occasional intact oval or linear vesicle (burrow), but these are terribly easy to overlook. The width of scabetic burrows is about 1 mm, and the length is generally 1.5 to 3.0 mm. Inflarnmation is prominent in excoriated lesions but is variable around intact burrows.
The distribution of lesions is quite characteristic. Burrows and excoriated papules are most commonly found in the web spaces of the fingers, around the elbows, on the anterior axillary folds, and over the buttocks. The breasts in women and the shaft and glans of the penis in men are also frequently affected. In patients with chronic infestation, widespread involvement of the trunk and extremities may also be noted. The face, except occasionally in infants, is normally spared.
Initially, burrows and eczematous papules are few in number, isolated, and widely separated. The scattered nature and small size of the eczematous lesions is a valuable diagnostic clue during the first few weeks of infestation, but this feature is lost in well-established cases of many months duration.
A history of contagion is an important diagnostic feature. Therefore, patients should be queried about the presence of pruritic eruptions in family members, friends, and sexual partners. In instances where clinical suspicion is high, it is permissible to attempt confirmation of one's diagnosis through a therapeutic trial of antiscabetic medication. Rapid response, as measured by abrupt cessation of itching, is tantamount to proof of diagnosis.
Identification of the mite in scrapings from lesions is theoretically desirable but is not always possible. In fact, scrapings carried out from any lesion other than an intact burrow are so rarely positive they are not worth the effort. When an intact burrow is present, the roof can be lifted off with a thin scalpel shave technique. This roof, together with material subsequently scraped from the base of the burrow, is then transferred to a microscope slide. A drop of immersion oil is placed over the scrapings, and a coverslip is applied. Examination under low power will regularly reveal mites, ova, or feces.
Atypical Manifestations. In a small number of patients a residuum of long-lasting, dome-shaped, erythematous, pruritic nodules remains after treatment has been completed. These papules and nodules are most commonly seen in young men, particularly around the waist and in the groin. These lesions do not contain live mites, instead, they apparently form as an immunologic response to scabetic antigenic material that remains after treatment. The lesions do eventually disappear but their resolution can be hastened by the intralesional injection of triamcinolone.
Under some circumstances (very poor hygiene, marked immunosuppression, or in institutionalized persons), scabetic infestation can become overwhelming, so that the entire body is involved in a generalized eczematous eruption. Such widespread infestation, sometimes severe enough to be termed exfoliative erythrodermatitis, has in the past been known as Norwegian scabies.

The Painful World of Cystic Acne and the Solutions Available
Cystic acne is one of the more severe types of acne there is and it develops in the form of cysts hence the name cystic acne. Cystic acne is also referred as nodulocystic acne, in it the cysts are filled with pus and are painful then the usual acne or other skin disorders. Acne cysts are unlike any other skin disorder in another sense as well as they are nodules of inflammation this is very rarely the case in other acne.
Cystic acne like other forms of acne is caused by an excess increase of sebum in the pores. Cystic acne can form on a number of places in the anatomy like the face, chest, back, shoulders and, occasionally, upper arms. These cysts are usually several centimeters in diameter, and can be quite painful. Varieties of treatments used to clear cystic acne include both topical and oral antibiotics, oral contraceptives and laser treatments. If cystic acne is not treated in time and is left to flourish it can cause severe scarring on the face.
There are a number of treatments available for cystic acne:
Home remedies:
Home remedies have proved effective in case of cystic acne but they can take their time to curing the problem and are not the preferred option for cystic acne sufferers.
Oral antibiotics and topical gels:
Often used in combination Antibiotics and gels are one of the most used treatments. Though their popularity is receding day by day because of the fact that they can have side effects.
Laser therapy:
Laser is also a treatment that has come out for cystic acne but it is a very expensive procedure and it has not shown great results.
Herbal medications:
Herbal medications will soon become the most popular cystic acne treatment as they have proved highly effective and they don’t have any side effects.

The Do or Die of Dermatology
Those of you who do not have bad skin, stop reading this. Well, keep reading if you want to, but for those of you who suffer from bad skin, please, read on. Dermatology sounds like a term intended solely for professionals with a degree. While that can most often be the case, anyone who has an interest in maintaining their skin, especially troublesome skin, should take it upon themselves to learn more about their unending life condition.
The study of dermatology concerns the knowledge, diagnosis, and treatment of skin disorders. "Disorders" seems to infer a rare or uncommon diagnosis; but plenty of long-time suffers know better. And while the study of dermatology might not be all that applicable to the average person without a degree, the average person can still play a large part in their own cure by being preventive about it. Treatment of your own skin is a matter best left to a trained professional; but no excuses stand for a lack of knowledge and from leading a preventative lifestyle. The so-called "Do or Die" of dermatology stems from a do or die attitude.
These are the several well-rounded tips that can be applied to a variety of different skin types. True, skin types vary from dry to oily, but these tips should be swallowed as general principle, and to at least be taken into consideration.
When it comes to washing your face, splash with cold water first. This will close any vulnerable pores; as the friction caused by rubbing your face can let in surface oils. Then use lukewarm water to rub away dirt, oil, and sweat. And last, splash with more cold water, to close up those pores. This practice of cold water versus warm can be applied to other aspects such as bathing or showering. Regulate between the temperatures in accordance to your own skin type. Dry skin can be prevented with cooler water, and vice versa. This tip is essential to balanced skin.
With that, it can be said that bad skin gets triggered in two different, and preventable, ways. Stress. Not psychological stress, which has not been proven, but physical stress. Heat and sweat will cause pores to dilate and clog in less natural ways than, say, secreted oils. Aside from the sweat, dilated pores allow outside germs and toxins to easily seep inside. This will either add to the bacteria, or will in effect clog a pore. Clogged pores make up the second trigger to irritated skin. It is not enough to simply wash skin, but effort must be made in exfoliating it as well. The irony stems from the fact that clogged pores tend to derive out of rough skin; but rough skin generally comes from over-exfoliation. Again, balance it out according to your own skin type.
Inevitably, the matter of food comes into play. The fact stands that no studies have accurately proven that a person's diet will cause an outbreak of bad skin; but what people tend to overlook are their own traits as individuals. Allergies. Allergic reactions can spur a variety of consequences. Keep track of what gets eaten, and how it may or may not correlate to the way your skin looks the following morning. So while studies of chocolate have not proven it to cause breakouts, close scrutiny of your own bodily reaction may prove otherwise.
So it pays to be your own dermatologist. But like any other disorder, problems with the skin can worsen if left untreated and undiagnosed. Part of knowing your own skin is knowing when you need help.

7 Acne Skin Care Secrets
Acne can be an annoying skin problem and tough to get rid of. But, there are ways to minimize the blemishes that you might be suffering from. Here are seven tips to help you do just that:
1. Know Your Skin. The absolute first step toward healthy skin, and particularly for those who are prone to acne, is knowing your exact skin type and how it reacts to different things. A surprising amount of people pay little or no attention to what may be causing their breakouts or what ingredients they're using on their skin. Generally, skin is either oily, dry, a combination of both, sensitive or prone to acne.
2. Choose the Right Products. The amount of acne skin care products available today is mind boggling, however, after knowing our true skin type, we can be sure to only use what's most compatible.
Most people with acne-prone skin tend to have oily skin, although combination and dry areas are not uncommon. Be sure to select a cleanser that's specially formulated for this skin disorder as they will usually contain ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, both of which help the skin regenerate itself faster. For severe acne try 10% benzoyl peroxide, and for mild to moderate cases, 5-10% is usually the recommended concentration.
A good toner is essential for keeping pores tight and unclogged. Either spray the toner directly onto the face, or apply with a cotton ball. For excessively oily skin, try a toner with three percent hydrogen peroxide, and for normal or dry skin, many people swear by the inexpensive witch hazel. Rubbing alcohol is mistakenly used for severe cases of oily skin as it actually dries out the skin far more than necessary, making the irritation and acne ultimately worse.
Contrary to popular belief, it is possible for people with acne to use a moisturizer. Choose either a light, non-comedogenic moisturizer, or one that's are oil-free so as not to aggravate acne and blemishes. Some of these moisturizers also contain antibacterial agents to keep acne causing bacterium at bay.
For makeup products, choose oil-free foundation and those that are designed for use with acne or sensitive skin. Any type of heavy makeup, including those for eye and cheek color, will clog pores and instigate an acne flare-up.
3. Hydration Matters. Simply put, water is vital for our skin as well as for most other functions and components of the body. Without water, we wouldn't survive, and neither would our skin. Be sure to drink at least eight glasses of water each day to keep your skin and body well hydrated.
4. Protect Your Skin. All skin, but especially skin that's sensitive or that has acne, should be protected from the sun's harmful UV rays. The sun does provide much needed vitamin D, however, 10 to 15 minutes a day early in the morning is all that's necessary for a healthy, daily dose.
A common, and rather dangerous, myth is that getting a facial sunburn will help clear up acne quickly as it causes the skin to peel and regenerate. While that part is true, this also speeds up the aging process and considerably increases the risks of skin cancer.
5. Treat Your Skin Gently. Instead of getting the skin extra clean, rubbing or scrubbing your face may actually cause permanent scarring and exacerbate acne. Even skin without acne should be cleansed gently to avoid damaging the delicate tissue. A good rule to remember is to use your hands instead of some type of washcloth or facial cleansing pad to avoid rupturing or aggravating acne sores. When you are able to safely exfoliate, to gently remove dead cells, use a gentle scrub made from natural ingredients such as ground walnuts as opposed to products with potentially strong or harsh ingredients.
For a easy way of reducing the redness and inflammation that usually accompanies acne, try crushing an aspirin into a bit of lemon juice and then applying the mixture to the most affected areas of the face just before bedtime. Although some people use toothpaste, not gel, as a spot-treatment on acne blemishes, this method may actually burn the skin doing more harm than good. Yet another home remedy that some swear by is taking a zinc vitamin tablet every day.
6. Minimize Stress. Stress and tension have more of an effect on the quality of our skin than we may realize, and for some, may directly contribute to breakouts or intensify acne. It's important to do whatever is necessary to relieve stress and find time for relaxation.
7. Have Patience. Keep in mind that it may take six to eight weeks to notice a difference when changing your current skin care regimen to an acne-friendly one. Most acne skin care products, whether prescription or over-the-counter strength, may take a month or two to show positive results. Unfortunately, some people never give it the entire eight weeks before giving up or switching to other methods of controlling their acne.
Follow these tips and you'll be on your way to healthier looking skin.
